Building an Evidence Base for Curriculum Reform

The symposium reports on the final year of a three year mixed methods research project being undertaken for the QCA (now QCDA) by the Centre for the Use of Research and Evidence in Education (CUREE), in partnership with the Centre for Developmental and Applied Research in Education (CeDARE) of the University of Wolverhampton. The project was commissioned by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), with the aim of informing its work in developing a modern world-class curriculum that will inspire and challenge all learners and prepare them for the future. QCA wishes both to uncover and build the evidence base for its development work on the curriculum, and to devise and implement processes for the diffusion and use of this evidence amongst policymakers and practitioners. The project includes four activity strands focused on exploring successful approaches to overcoming the obstacles schools encounter as they attempt to innovate and develop the curriculum on offer to their students. The four integrated strands of activity comprise:
